Hari Raya Puasa

Hari Raya Puasa or Hari Raya Aidilfitri/Eid ul-Fitr also known as the Feast of Breaking the Fast, is a joyous festival that marks the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. It is one of the most important religious festivals in Islam and is celebrated by Muslims worldwide. Hari Raya Puasa falls on the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal and is marked by the sight of the new moon.

Hari Raya Puasa is a time of joy, thanksgiving and celebration. Muslims break the fast they have practised throughout Ramadan and take part in the festivities. The festival usually lasts one or more days, depending on regional traditions.

During Hari Raya Puasa, there is also a strong focus on charity and giving to one's neighbour. It is traditional to pay Zakat al-Fitr, a special donation given to the needy and poor before Eid prayers. This donation enables the less privileged to also participate in the festival and meet their basic needs.

In Singapore, it is a public holiday; until 1968, there were even two public holidays. According to the Public Holidays Act, if it falls on a Sunday, the following day on Monday is designated as a public holiday (also called a substitute holiday). The celebration of Hari Raya Puasa lasts three days and for some even up to a month.

The list below is a conversion from Islamic lunar calendar to Gregorian calendar, it may have variations as regionally it is determined by sighting of the crescent moon.
