National Day 🇶🇦

Qatar National Day is celebrated annually on December 18. It marks the unification of Qatar in 1878 under the leadership of Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, who is regarded as the founder of the modern State of Qatar.

On December 18, 1878, Sheikh Jassim succeeded his father, Sheikh Mohammed bin Thani, as the ruler of Qatar. He is celebrated for his efforts to unify the country’s tribes, establish its independence, and lay the foundations for a sovereign state. Under his leadership, Qatar strengthened its political and economic stability, resisting external control from both regional and colonial powers.

Although Qatar gained full independence from British protection in 1971, National Day commemorates Sheikh Jassim’s pivotal role in shaping the nation's identity and legacy, rather than the date of independence. Introduced in June 2007. Previously, it was celebrated on September 3, Qatar's Independence Day.
