Start of Ramadan

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and holds great religious significance for Muslims around the world, including in Qatar. During this sacred month, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs to purify the soul and deepen their spiritual connection to Allah.

The origin of Ramadan dates back to over 1,400 years ago. It commemorates the first revelation of the Qur'an to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through the angel Jibreel (Gabriel). This event occurred during the month of Ramadan, specifically on a night known as Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Power), which is considered one of the last ten nights of the month.

Fasting during Ramadan was prescribed in the Qur'an (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:183) as a way for Muslims to attain taqwa (piety or God-consciousness).

  • Daily fasting is observed by the Muslim population.
  • Iftar, the meal to break the fast, is a significant daily event, often shared with family and the community.
  • Tents and community gatherings are common, providing food and space for prayer and socialization.
  • Government and business hours are adjusted to accommodate fasting schedules.
  • Acts of charity and kindness increase, reflecting the spirit of giving and empathy.

Qatar also hosts cultural events, Quranic competitions, and family-centered programming during Ramadan, fostering a sense of unity and spirituality across society.

The list below is a conversion from the Islamic lunar calendar to Gregorian calendar, it may have variations as regionally it is determined by sighting of the crescent moon.
