Diwali ๐Ÿช” (Hindu)

Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most important Hindu festivals. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Traditionally celebrated over five days, it includes lighting oil lamps (diyas), decorating homes, exchanging gifts, and enjoying festive meals and sweets.

The origins of Diwali vary across regions and religions but are most commonly linked to the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana, as told in the Ramayana. For others, it celebrates the goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity.

In the United States, Diwali has been celebrated by Indian immigrants since the 1960s and 1970s. As the South Asian community has grown, so has the visibility of Diwali. Today, Diwali is observed not only in homes and temples but also in schools, universities, and public spaces across the country.

Major cities like New York, San Francisco, and Chicago host large Diwali events, complete with music, dance, food, and cultural showcases.

In 2007, the U.S. House of Representatives officially recognized Diwali, highlighting its importance to the countryโ€™s multicultural identity.
