Yom Kippur (Jewish)

Yom Kippur, also known as the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. It is observed on the 10th day of Tishrei, the seventh month in the Hebrew calendar, and marks the culmination of the Ten Days of Repentance that begin with Rosh Hashanah.

The origins of Yom Kippur date back to the Torah, specifically in the Book of Leviticus, where it is described as a day for fasting, prayer, and seeking forgiveness. Jews refrain from eating, drinking, and other physical pleasures for approximately 25 hours, focusing instead on spiritual reflection and repentance.

In the United States, Yom Kippur has been observed since the arrival of Jewish immigrants in the 17th and 18th centuries. Over time, with waves of immigration from Europe and other regions, Jewish communities grew and established synagogues, schools, and community centers across the country.

Today, Yom Kippur is widely respected across American society. Many schools and workplaces in areas with large Jewish populations offer time off or adjust schedules. The day is marked by synagogue services, the recitation of the Kol Nidre prayer, and personal acts of atonement and reconciliation.
